Drinking water is not a miracle cure for aging. But it is part of a healthy lifestyle, just like a healthy diet and sufficient exercise. In that sense, it can indeed extend your life.
New research shows that insufficient hydration leads to faster aging and a greater risk of chronic diseases. This is the conclusion of a large-scale study by the US National Institute of Heath. They followed as many as 11,000 older American adults for 25 years. Source: The Lancet
The results of the study are clear: people with poor hydration are more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and a greater risk of premature death. How do the researchers come to that conclusion? To do this, they regularly checked the sodium concentration in the blood of that large group of participants, a good measure of the level of hydration. Fortunately, the researchers found that most participants had sodium concentrations within a “normal” level: 135 to 146 millimoles per liter.
But they also discovered a group of elderly people who do not drink enough water. In that group, the risk of dying younger is as much as 21% higher than among the better-hydrated participants. They also have a higher risk of developing diseases such as dementia and diabetes.
If drinking enough water proves so important, it is necessary to ensure that people also do this effectively. Installing a water tap in your company, organization or school can help with that. So, at Robi Professional, we will continue to promote tapped water as a healthy and ecological choice.
We hear from many of our customers that installing a water tap gives a serious' boost 'to water consumption. Victor and Laura, students at the Atheneum Voskenslaan in Ghent, also told us that they now drink much more water than before. So learning young is done old!
